A single father of two small children, John was struggling to feed his family. End Hunger Connecticut! helped John apply for and secure SNAP benefits which allow him to put nutritious meals on his family’s table every day.
If you know someone experiencing hunger, encourage them to call our SNAP Call Center at (866) 974-SNAP to see if they may be eligible for SNAP benefits.
On a recent summer afternoon at Otis Library, Rose watched her five children eat a free, nutritious lunch – her youngest son, Thomas, combining sunflower seeds into a salsa mix. “From the standpoint of not having to take the kids out, it’s something different. And it’s still an ‘eating out’ experience for them,’ said Rose, who lives in Norwich. “It’s really helpful to have them be able to get lunch while we’re getting books.”
At the Otis location, Norwich school district employee Kelly said she gets up to 40 kids a day during the summer meal season. “It’s really, really, really needed. It is very good we can do this,” Darragh said. “And it’s fun. I love showing the children all the food, and they get excited.”
“This is an important program near and dear to our hearts,” Diane Farquharson, TEEG’s family program manager.”
My brother suffers from achondroplasia and a severe form of scoliosis, which inevitably led to paralysis from the waist down. Major surgery in his late teenage years, and several subsequent surgeries, delayed the paralysis until he was in his mid 40’s. Once he became a paraplegic, he spent years fighting for Social Security Disability benefits. During that time he lived in extreme poverty, borrowing from family and friends for basic needs. I eventually persuaded him to swallow some pride and apply for SNAP benefits. I am grateful to the SNAP program for providing my brother with funds for food.
Point blank, SNAP is about providing food, a basic need of everyone. And, we have to ask ourselves, do we prioritize food or bombs? Besides, SNAP is one of the most efficient dollar for value programs out there. It saved me when I needed it, and now I don’t… but I might be further behind in debt, if not health, if I didn’t have this essential extra support in a lean time.
