| The Food Research and
Action Center’s (FRAC) annual “School
Breakfast Scorecard” (To view this document, download
Acrobat
Reader), analyzes school breakfast participation in all
50 states and the District of Columbia to determine state-by-state
rankings and follow trends in participation. Across the nation,
School Breakfast Program participation increased in the 2004-05
school year; each day, 7.5 million low-income children ate a
school breakfast. Nationwide, more than 4 in 5 (81.1%) of the
schools that offered a school lunch also participated in school
breakfast. In Connecticut, though, less than half (49.2%) of
schools that offered a school lunch also served breakfast and
45,000 low-income students ate a school breakfast each day,
only 33% of students eating lunch. |

| A successful breakfast program requires
the support of the entire school community. Principals, food
service directors, teachers, nurses, and parents all play an
important role in both implementing and promoting school breakfast.
There are creative ways to provide breakfast in school, from
universal in-classroom breakfast to grab-and-go meals as kids
leave the bus or enter the cafeteria. End Hunger Connecticut!
