SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM
End Hunger Connecticut! provides outreach and education services
for summer food programs around the state. We work collaboratively
with the CT State Dept. of Education to target high need communities
(large numbers of free and reduced priced meal students) that could
start or expand summer food programs. In July 2006, EHC! in
collaboration with the City of Hartford, State Dept. of Education,
USDA and many other state and community partners held a Summer Food
kick-off event for the State of Connecticut at Goodwin Park in
Hartford. The "Get in the Mood for Summer Food" event fed,
entertained and educated the surrounding community with nutrition
and food assistance as its focus.
Most recently we launched our summer 2006 small grants program,
"Operation Participation". The program presented an opportunity for
traditional summer food sites to apply for a $500 grant for
resources to increase participation at their sites. The grant
provided for the introduction of games, activities, and educational
resources to the programs. Some sponsors were also able to integrate
physical activity and nutritional awareness for the overall well
being of children.
